Sabrina Carpenter’s VMAs Look Is an Ode To Vintage Madonna
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, which was held on Wednesday, was truly a star-studded affair. As several Hollywood A-listers stepped out on the black carpet, they exuded glamour and glory. One look that has caught the internet’s attention was Sabrina Carpenter’s Madonna gown, which she pulled out from the fashion archives to bring back the Old Hollywood glam.
Sabrina Carpenter rocks Madonna’s iconic gown from the 1991 Oscars
Sabrina Carpenter slipped into the stunning vintage Bob Mackie gown that pop legend Madonna previously donned at the 1991 Oscars. The sparkly floor-length gown features an off-shoulder sweetheart neckline adorned with silver beaded embellishments. Besides that, Carpenter’s open blonde hair and bright lips accentuated the singer’s Madonna-inspired look. The “Espresso” hitmaker completed the ensemble with jewelry from De Beers and a matching set of manicures.
At the 1991 Academy Awards, Madonna wore the same Bob Mackie gown paired with a white fur stole. The singer was joined by pop superstar Michael Jackson as her date on the awards night. The two hit the headlines following their iconic red carpet appearance.
Vogue reported that Carpenter sourced the gown from Tab Vintage. The owner, Alexis Novak, told the outlet that the singer’s stylist, Jared Ellner, and his team “reached out with a really incredible moodboard.” Tab’s team then “sent them a deck of pieces” that they “had in that vein.” Novak added, “We’re so happy with what she decided on!” Novak also shared the gown was originally designed for Madonna’s performance at the 1991 Oscars. “It was inspired by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” Tab’s owner said.
Carpenter arrived at the 2024 VMAs with seven nominations. The singer took home the Song of the Year trophy for her hit song “Espresso.”
