“For passionate film lovers.” Janus Films is re-releasing the French New Wave classic L’Amour Fou (aka just Amour Fou) at the Lincoln Center cinemas in NYC this week. The film is getting a nice 4K restoration re-release in select US theaters, after recently playing at the 2023 New York Film Festival earlier this month (it originally premiered at NYFF in 1972). The 4K restoration was carried out by Les Films du Losange with the support of Les Films du Veilleur and the CNC under the supervision of Caroline Champetier AFC. “One of the great French films of its era. Watching this is a life experience as much as a film experience.” During the rehearsals for the production of the tragedy Andromaque, the leading actress and her director, a couple behind the scenes, can’t find a way to leave their personal problems at home. Life imitates fiction, creating a real tragedy for this couple when the man finds comfort with other women while the actress prefers to stay focused on her work, as if nothing is happening with her partner. Starring Bulle Ogier and Jean-Pierre Kalfon. If the new Scorsese film isn’t long enough, this 4 hour French film might be a good escape as well.
Here’s the new 4K re-release trailer (+ poster) for Jacques Rivette’s L’Amour Fou, direct from YouTube:
Full intro from FilmLinc: A stage work forms while a marriage collapses in one of the most remarkable of Jacques Rivette’s many explorations of the intersection of life and art. Shooting in a dazzling mixture of 35mm and 16mm film stocks, Rivette cuts between an experimental theater company’s rehearsals for a production of Racine’s Andromaque, a television crew shooting a documentary of the performance, and the imploding relationship of the director Sebastian (Jean-Pierre Kalfon) and his actress wife Claire (Bulle Ogier). Gradually, Sebastian and Claire pull each other deeper into a violent emotional vortex until, in the film’s startling, hour-long pièce de résistance, they lock themselves inside their apartment and embark on what the critic Tom Milne termed “a veritable orgy of passion which can be called neither love nor hate.” L’Amour Fou is directed by French New Wave filmmaker Jacques Rivette, only his third feature film at the time. The screenplay is by Jacques Rivette & Marilù Parolini. The film originally opened in early 1969 in France, but didn’t play in the US until the 1972 New York Film Festival. Janus Films will re-release L’Amour Fou in select US theaters starting on October 20th, 2023 this fall. For more info, visit their official site.
