Gael García Bernal & Renate Reinsve in Sci-Fi ‘Another End’ Trailer #1

“Take this time to spend it well with her.” 01 Distribution in Italy and Rai Cinema have revealed the first official promo trailer for Another End, an intriguing sci-fi film from Italian filmmaker Piero Messina. This is set to premiere at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival this weekend, hence the trailer dropping. It’s playing in the Main Competition as a contender for the Golden Bear. Yet another film about grief and someone trying to bring back a lost loved one through futuristic tech. Since Sal has lost Zoe, the love of his life, he has been living only in his memories: memories like fragments of a shattered mirror that cannot be put back together. Sal’s sister suggests he turn to Another End, a new technology that promises to ease the pain of separation by briefly bringing back to life the consciousness of those who have died. Sal finds Zoe again in this way, but in the body of another woman. What was broken seems to come together again. But this joy is fragile, fleeting, treacherous. Can love truly survive as a secret guarded by the body? Starring Gael García Bernal, Renate Reinsve, Bérénice Bejo, Olivia Williams, and Pal Aron. We’ve seen this exact concept before in other similar films (like Swan Song), but will this turn out better? Will it do offer up anything different?

Via Berlinale: “Sal’s empty eyes reveal he has been living only on memories since he lost the love of his life, Zoe. Memories like fragments of a shattered mirror that cannot be put back together. Observing her brother with growing concern, Sal’s sister Ebe suggests that he tries Another End, a new technology that promises to ease the pain of separation by briefly bringing back to life the consciousness of a person who has died. In this way, Sal finds Zoe again – but in the body of another woman. It is a body he does not know but in which he is mysteriously able to recognise his wife. What was broken suddenly seems to be mended. In fact, it grants Sal the time to share a little more life with Zoe, to love her again, to be loved by her and, ultimately, to say [a final] goodbye. But this is a fragile, ephemeral and insidious joy. When Sal reaches the end of the programme, he has no intention of meekly watching as his love dissolves in the definitive loss of his wife.”

Another End is directed by Italian writer / filmmaker Piero Messina, making his second feature film after directing L’attesa previously, as well as the series “Artists in Love”, “Suburra: Blood on Rome”, “Valorose”, and “L’ora – Ink Over Bullets” most recently. The screenplay is written by Piero Messina, Giacomo Bendotti, Valentina Gaddi, Sebastiano Melloni. Produced by Nicola Giuliano, Francesca Cima, Carlotta Calori, Viola Prestieri, Paolo Del Brocco. This is premiering at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival in the Main Competition this month. It will open first in Italy at the end of March – no other international release dates have been set yet.
