“Celebrate seven decades of Godzilla.” Roaaarrr!! The King of Monsters is celebrating his 70th anniversary this year. The original Gojira movie opened in movie theaters in November 1954 in Japan, introducing the world to the giant radioactive lizard kaiju monster that would become a cinema icon. Toho Inc. has debuted a 3-1/2 minute tribute video to mark the occasion – it’s a good one. Here’s their full intro: “Celebrate 70 years of Godzilla, from its humble beginnings in 1954 to its groundbreaking cinematic spectacles of today. With each roar and devastating stomp, Godzilla has shattered the boundaries of imagination and inspired a community of filmmakers, artists, and fans. Smashing box office records and earning ever increasing critical acclaim, Godzilla continues to establish itself as the King of the Monsters. Long live the King!” It’s awesome to see this franchise is still going strong, with both Japanese and US movies coming out nowadays, and still making history (as Godzilla Minus One did becoming the first one to win an Academy Award – it’s back in theaters this fall). “From the depths of the sea, to the stars above – Godzilla reigns supreme!” He always does. I love this big guy, happy to see him in many more movies. This is a fun “look back” – click play below.

Here’s the 70th anniversary celebration video Godzilla: 70 Years Strong, direct from Toho’s YouTube:

It’s not every day an icon turns 70. To commemorate the King of the Monsters and its milestone anniversary on November 3, Toho Inc. unveiled the new Godzilla: 70 Years Strong video during the Godzilla vs. NYCC: 70 Years of the King of the Monsters Panel at New York Comic Con 2024. This video highlights Godzilla’s journey from 1954 through the present, capturing the stomps, the “SKREEONK”s, and heat rays that have captivated fans through the eras. Ishirô Honda’s original Gojira (aka Godzilla) movie opened in November 1954 in Japan. It didn’t open in any other countries until 1956. Currently there are 38 Godzilla films: 33 Japanese films produced and distributed by Toho Co., Ltd., and five American films; one by TriStar Pictures (yep the Roland Emmerich one from 1998) and four films (part of the Monsterverse franchise) by Legendary Pictures. The most recent US movie is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from earlier this year. And the most recent Japanese movie is Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One, which won Best Visual Effects at the 2024 Academy Awards – the first ever Oscar for the Godzilla franchise.
