“They won’t fear it until they understand it.” With the awards season in full swing now, Universal Pictures is putting all of their weight behind one of 2023’s top contenders: Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. It might just go all the way and win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and a bunch of other Oscars. As part of their awards season promo, they’ve released a series of 2-minute behind-the-scenes featurettes for all of the various categories: costumes, cinematography, production design, directing, score, editing, hair & make-up, VFX, and every other technical aspect. All 10 of the main videos are available to watch below. I am also completely with Oppenheimer, it’s on my Top 10 of 2023 (list here), and I’m happy to give it as much support as I can in hopes that it’ll rightfully win some awards. I also suggest reading this excellent article by A.A. Dowd called “Oppenheimer was the movie of 2023” for even more context to why it’s Oppie’s year. If there’s one category I believe it must win – I truly believe Ludwig Göransson’s is one of the best movie scores of all-time. Yes, seriously. There’s also a video about his work on this film – the last video in this list.

You can rewatch the first trailer / second trailer for Nolan’s Oppenheimer here or the full 5-minute promo. You can also read our deep-dive editorial from the summer “On the Philosophy of Barbie & Oppenheimer.”
The movie follows theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project (started in 1939 it ran from 1942 to 1946) and his contributions that led to the creation of the very first atomic bomb during World War II. Oppenheimer is directed by the acclaimed, award-winning British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, of movies Following, Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet previously. The screenplay is also written by Christopher Nolan, adapted from the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird & Martin Sherwin. Produced by Charles Roven, Christopher Nolan & Emma Thomas. Universal first opened Nolan’s Oppenheimer in theaters everywhere on July 21st, 2023 earlier this year – also in IMAX. It was re-released again on IMAX screens in November. It’s now out to buy on Blu-ray / 4K. One of your 2023 faves?
