Aubrey Plaza Reflects on Losing Deadpool 2 Role: ‘That One Hurt’

Aubrey Plaza may be starring in Marvel’s upcoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries series, but there’s another superhero project she really wishes she could’ve been a part of.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, shared recently by Twitter account @plazaupdates, Plaza recalled her failed audition for 2018’s Deadpool 2.

“There’s a lot of roles that I really wanted that I didn’t get, but everything happens for a reason, she said.”I don’t know, the one that sticks out to me for some reason is Deadpool 2. I’d just come off a plane and I think I was shooting Legion at the time. I was really not in a good zone because auditioning — you have to be in an auditioning zone and I was in a work zone. That one hurt. Me and Ryan Reynolds, what could go wrong? We’d be so great together, but [I] blew it.”

Though Plaza doesn’t specifically mention who she auditioned to play in Deadpool 2, she appears to be alluding to X-Force member Domino, who stars alongside Reynolds in a number of scenes in the movie. The role ultimately went to Joker’s Zazie Beetz, who recently revealed she won’t be returning for Deadpool 3.

Aubrey Plaza and Marvel: From Legion to Darkhold Diaries

Created by Noah Hawley for FX, Legion is also based on a Marvel Comics character, as the show centers around the son of Charles Xavier, David Haller/Legion. In the series, Plaza plays Lenore “Lenny” Busker, one of David’s best friends. While Lenny dies in the series’ very first episode, Amahl Farouk/the Shadow King uses her form to recreate himself later on in the show.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, meanwhile, is an upcoming WandaVision spin-off that sees Plaza play a witch named Rio Vidal. Starring alongside Plaza are Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, Debra Jo Rupp as Sharon Davis, Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu, Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer Kale, Joe Locke as Wiccan, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley as Hulking.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is currently scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in late 2024.
